Lucerne Talks : « On Collaborations » - Symposium for architectural pedagogy
During the symposium, hosted on Friday, 21 November in Lucerne, practitioners and researchers will discuss the potential of collaboration in architectural education and research. The event will be followed by a book launch of the 5th edition “Teaching Urbanism” and a collective dinner.
The discussion will focus on two guiding questions:
- What is the role of collaboration in architecture education and research?
- In which way can we collaborate with each other in architecture education and research to reconnect to society?
HSLU invites experts who contribute exemplary content, methods and insights to professional practice, teaching and research in various ways – both within and outside their own practice.
Collaborations arise from shared interests and goals, but they are always fraught with conflict. Architecture cannot be created without collective organisation or individual commitment. What characterises collective work – and where are its limits?
Architecture is a collaborative endeavour, the result of negotiations, coincidences, tensions and synergies. Collaboration is a necessity: we depend on working well together. In architecture, different interests constantly clash and must be negotiated. Roles are constantly changing – between internal and external perspectives, between ignorance and knowledge, between generalism and specialisation, between aspiration and reality.
The demands placed on built space require increasingly complex collaboration with representatives of other disciplines – each with their own tools, planning cultures and objectives. What common language and vocabulary can we develop to think beyond the boundaries of our discipline? What craftsmanship is needed to achieve this? And how can such a culture of collaboration be anchored in teaching and research?
