Venice Studio Milan: a summer workshop to activate permanence through temporality

Hosted at BASE Milano, this summer workshop taking place in Milan between the 16th and the 27th of June explores how temporary architectural interventions can spark lasting urban change. Guided by 3 renowned international architectural studios, Assemble, Muoto and Kosmos, students will built installations and test ideas through real-world experimentation.

The theme of this workshop is inspired by the research « Temporary X Permanence » of Atelier Atollo, an Italian practice working across architecture and exhibition design.

How can temporary activations and strategies implement permanent changes? How can they influence the long-term use of space? Can they become a lens through which operating a paradigm shift in the system of value that we use to design a space? Can temporary solutions prompt a much wider permanent change?

This workshop investigates these questions by engaging with a place characterized by a layered identity and a constantly evolving nature: BASE is in fact one of the largest industrial redevelopment sites in Europe. Formerly home of the Ansaldo factory, the area was redeveloped as part of a project to revitalize Tortona district, transforming it into a cultural and creative hub. In 2016, BASE opened its doors, becoming a center for contemporary culture, art, design, and experimentation. Today BASE Milano is a hybrid cultural center, many things at once, with constantly changing needs, a perfect testing ground for this workshop. Characterized by the continuous transformation of its space, BASE has shaped its current identity through small interventions of temporary nature that have turned its spaces into “magnets” capable of creating several spatial and social dimensions.

Three architectural studios are invited to investigate and explore the lasting impacts that temporary installations can have on the activation and use of urban and public spaces, specifically those ones of BASE: Assemble (UK), Kosmos (Switzerland/Russia) and Muoto (France) will be the workshop leaders who will guide students to design three installations that will be built next year. By engaging with the transitional nature of BASE’s spaces, these installations will serve as an additional layer that could emphasize the potential for future permanent uses while enabling temporary and transitional activations.

Topics

Students will explore one of these three themes:

  • SEATING: investigating new approaches to conceive, design and use a tribune
  • SHELTERING: imagining overhead structures to provide shelter and define spaces
  • STAGING: designing multifunctional platforms for performances, events and more

The workshop will be held inside BASE spaces, where Learning Rooms equipped with all necessary tools to design and present projects will be available to students 24h a day. During the workshop, students will have the opportunity to present their projects to other renowned architects, in curated public events reserved for Venice Studio. They will also have the chance to participate in a series of public lectures moderated by Atelier Atollo held in BASE’s Main Hall.

Students, researchers, and recent graduates of architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, interior architecture and planning worldwide are eligible to apply.
